Cliftonville FC suffered a 2-1 defeat to Glentoran in the Boyle Sports Premiership, a result that halts their momentum and leaves them fifth in the table. The Reds were undone by a late goal at Solitude on Saturday, despite a fine equaliser from Dean McMaster.

Sean McKinney, a supporter writing the matchday perspective, captured the mood. "My prediction of a 2-1 scoreline was correct, though my prediction that it would be in Cliftonville’s favour was unfortunately not," he said. The loss is the second in a row for Cliftonville, following a 2-0 defeat away to Larne, and their form over the last five games now reads two wins and three losses.

Early promise undone

Cliftonville started brightly and looked the better side for the opening quarter of an hour. Goalkeeper PJ Morrison was called into action early, making two good saves to keep the visitors at bay. That promising start was undone in the 15th minute, however, when a defensive mix-up and a failed clearance allowed Glentoran's J. Malone to open the scoring.

The Reds responded well. They won a free-kick on the left edge of the Glentoran penalty area in the 32nd minute, and Dean McMaster stepped up to strike a beautiful set-piece into the net, levelling the scores. The goal sparked a feisty end to the half, with an off-the-ball incident leading to grappling and shoving before order was restored.

Late heartbreak at Solitude

After the break, Cliftonville felt they should have had a penalty when Brian Healy went down in the box in the 56th minute. The appeals were waved away, a decision McKinney described as a stonewall spot-kick that should have been given. The decisive moment came with just seven minutes of normal time remaining. Glentoran's J. Jenkins found the net in the 83rd minute to put the visitors back in front.

Cliftonville pushed for a second equaliser and created late chances, but none were converted. A Glentoran player was shown a second yellow card late on, but the Reds could not capitalise on the numerical advantage. The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 loss, sending the team to fifth place with 12 points from eight matches. They now sit ten points behind league leaders Coleraine FC, a gap that underlines the need for consistency.

The atmosphere at a packed Solitude remained supportive throughout, with the team heading to the dressing room to applause from the Red Army. Banners from supporters' clubs like the Paris Reds and Tommy Breslin CFC were visible around the ground. Looking ahead, attention turns to a chance to get back on track. Cliftonville travel to face Limavady United, who are tenth, this Saturday. Despite the setback, McKinney's closing words reflected a resilient spirit. "A disappointing result, but we’ll bounce back," he said. "We are Cliftonville, Super Cliftonville."
